Across Cleveland, there have been 4,993 reports of illegal dumping in the past year, according to 311 data. Ward 11 Cleveland City Council Member Nikki Hudson recently took to the floor during a full council meeting to share her frustrations with illegal dumping in her ward and the city at large.

“My residents are offended,” Hudson told Signal Cleveland. “Our neighborhood is not a garbage dump.”

People are leaving old tires, bags of household trash, discarded mattresses, and heaps of contractor debris on empty lots and at vacant homes, according to city data.

Illegal dumping is more than an eyesore

For Hudson and some residents, illegal dumping is more than an eyesore, it’s a quality-of-life issue. Trash can make a block look unattractive, block sideways and attract rodents.

Signal Cleveland wants to hear directly from Cleveland residents who deal with illegal dumping in their neighborhoods. If you know of an active or recurring dumping site on your street, block or neighborhood alley, send us your photos and details.

Community Reporter (he/him)
I work to gain the trust of Cleveland residents through direct community engagement and storytelling. My goal is to amplify and celebrate the residents and stakeholders who contribute to the success of city neighborhoods. I’m hoping to erase the negative stigma that has been cast on some neighborhoods throughout the years.
