Cuyahoga Common Pleas Judge William Vodrey staved off a primary challenge from an assistant county prosecutor with an Irish surname that usually brings luck in judicial races.

Vodrey, a Democrat, was first elected to the Common Pleas bench in 2020 and received high marks from Judge4Yourself, a group of legal professionals that rates candidates. He was the only incumbent on the court with a primary challenger. Vodrey told Ideasteam Public Media he suspected Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley was unhappy with some of his decisions and was trying to oust him.

Vodrey will face Timothy W. Clary in the Nov. 3 General Election. In February, Clary was appointed by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine to the Ohio 8th District Court of Appeals. Previously, DeWine appointed Clary to a seat on the Common Pleas General Division but he lost an election for that seat in 2024.
