Eugene Miller, a former Cleveland City Council member and former state lawmaker, is on a path to return to the General Assembly.

Miller, who was backed by the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, beat Charlotte Perkins, Mike Seals and Lauren R. Welch for Ohio House District 20. The district includes downtown Cleveland, part of Tremont, Slavic Village, and a part of Collinwood.

He will face Republican Donna Walker-Brown in the general election in November, which favors Miller. The district leans 88% Democratic, according to data compiled by the website Daveโ€™s Redistricting. The winner will replace Terrence Upchurch, who could not seek re-election because of term limits.

Miller told Signal Cleveland last month that he wants to return to public office after more than a decade because his experience in and out of government has prepared him to work with both parties. Since leaving office, he’s been a substitute teacher, a small business owner and a political consultant.
