Sign up for summer school
Elementary school summer learning
The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) offers free summer learning programs for K-3 students at eight schools throughout the city. The schools that will host summer programs are listed on the district’s website. Registration is currently open and the programs will all begin on June 9.
Summer school is broken into two parts. In the morning, students will focus on math and literacy schools. In the afternoon a partner, like the Cleveland Playhouse or the Boys & Girls Club, will offer a fun activity.
CMSD provides shuttles to summer learning programming that pick up and drop off at a number of schools throughout the city and lunch to all students who attend. Click here for drop off and pick up times and locations.
Middle school summer learning
For rising 7th and 8th graders, the district has a Pre-Algebra boot camp offered at three high schools across the city. The goal is to help students get ready to take Algebra 1 by reviewing math concepts.
The program begins June 9 and registration is still open here.
High school summer learning
CMSD’s high school summer programming is available at three different high schools, the Cleveland School of the Arts, Max S. Hayes High School and Natividad Pagan International Newcomers Academy. These programs are mostly focused on retaking courses that students missed or did not pass.
Breakfast and lunch is served and CMSD has Greater Cleveland RTA bus passes for students who need transportation.
Summer Camps at Cleveland recreation centers
City-run recreation centers throughout Cleveland offer dozens of free programs, courses and camps for all different ages. The camps are free, most of them last around eight weeks and go the full day but have different start and end dates.
The programs have different focuses from STEM exploration to creativity and art and are offered at four different rec centers throughout the city. The city has a guide to all of its summer programming and how to register listed online.
Summer camps for artists, scientists, adventurers and athletes:
CMSD also has a long list of summer camps and programs in the Greater Cleveland area this summer on its website.
They have different start and end dates and are geared toward different age groups. Many of the camps cost money but many are also free or offer scholarships and discounts.

The activities range from academic and STEM-focused to music and visual arts to sleepaway and outdoor adventure camps. Many of Cleveland’s major cultural and research institutions participate by hosting summer camps and activities.
