Most Cleveland school district students start school on Aug. 18. It marks the beginning of the district’s new “unified” calendar that eliminated year-round and extended school years and days for students at some schools. Kindergartners start on Aug. 22 and pre-K students start throughout the following week. Now, only two schools โ The School of One and the Downtown Educational Center at the county’s detention center โ have different schedules.
- School start and end times still vary. Find them for each school here.
- Parents or caregivers who need to check their child’s enrollment can do so here or call 216-838-3675.
- Most schools will be hosting back-to-school meet and greet events in the evening on Aug. 14 and 15. Find the days and times for each school here.
CMSD student grades online
The district has rolled out a new electronic grade book (often it is referred to as PowerSchool) where caregivers and parents can see their child’s progress, grades and communicate with teachers. Sign up to access the information from your computer or cell phone.
No cell phones in the classroom
An Ohio law that took effect last year bars cell phones in the classrooms. CMSD put policies in place to follow the law, though each school has set its own rules or methods for how to keep cell phones out of students hands during learning time. Some schools have special pouches for the phones, while others require they be kept in backpacks or in bins stored in a classroom.

CMSD school transportation
The district is responsible for transporting somewhere around 15,000 students to school, with some riding traditional yellow schools buses, others picked up by contracted drivers or services and some high school students taking Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority rapids or buses. For bus-riders, information is usually sent out about a week before school starts with a bus stop location and pick-up and drop-off times. If a parent or caregiver doesn’t have this information, they can communicate with the transportation staff through the Let’s Talk app. or call 216.838.4BUS (4287). Families and students can also download the district bus tracker to see the location of the bus their student is assigned to.
